Jeremy Lalrinnunga is India’s new Golden boy as he bagged the Gold in CWG Games, Birmingham in 2022. He lifted a total weight of 300kg (snatch – 140kg; clean and jerk – 160 kg).
He is an Indian weightlifter from Aizawl, Mizoram who represented India in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and clinched gold there as well.
Early Life
He began his training at the age of 6 as a boxer in his father’s boxing gym. Due to his father’s financial issues, the boxing academy was closed when he was 8 years old.
At the age of 7, he used to go to a gym in his town and observe several boys lifting weights. From there, his interest in weightlifting began to grow. When discussing it in an interview, he remarked,
“I used to watch boys training at a gym near my house. They used to lift weights. It excited me. That’s what gave me the encouragement I needed to try my hand at the sport. I approached those boys in the gym and asked them if they can teach me how to lift. I started doing it and started lifting weights with perfection. May be God wanted me to become a weightlifter someday.”
